Review – Molly’s Money Saving Digest
Posted by jlsgrant in Book & Product Reviews on April 3, 2010
OK….I’ll be honest. I’ve been enjoying The Old Schoolhouse Magazine for quite some time now. I’ve seen the advertisements for Molly’s Money Saving Digest every month and never gave it a thought. I thought maybe it was yet another one of those crazy coupon type things. You know the ones! I have some great friends who love their coupons, but not me. I’m all about convenience; not something I’m particularly proud of. I’m just not a coupon cutter. I do not scientifically organize coupons in a giant file box and carry it with me everywhere I go just in case I need a coupon. I’m pretty happy when my local grocer has a good “Buy One, Get One”! (But still, I am proud of those of you who are “clippers”! With discipline and organization, you can save quite a bit of money. Someday, I really should join your ranks!)
Anyway, I think “money-saving digest” is a bit of a misnomer. Molly’s Money Saving Digest is so much more than that! It is a collection of great tips for organized, frugal living. As a monthly publication, it has regular sections not only about what’s on sale, but tips and tools for household organization, inexpensive decorating ideas, recipes and much, much more. In the January 2010 edition, the section entitled “Begin with the Basics” had a wonderful section on pies, simply written along with personal anecdotes. I enjoyed how she incorporated a personal story with the pie recipes. That always makes a more interesting read. I’m not much of a baker, but I’m inspired to give it a try! This issue also has helpful forms for organizing your household finances, your daily to-do’s, and even your clothing. The “Kid’s Corner” follows a similar train of thought, as they learn about checking accounts; how to write a check and balance a check book.
As someone who enjoys craft projects, and has plenty of supplies on hand, I will certainly be able to put the “Feather Your Nest – Frugally” section to the test. I’m looking forward to using some wonderful family photos to create beautiful canvas artwork for the wall. If you want to know how, you’ll have to purchase the January Issue!
Lastly, I want to share with you one of my favorite parts of Molly’s digest; the weekly dinner menus! I am terrible about this and sadly, there are too many days when we can be found calling in our order for Chinese or Pizza! What I need is someone to tell me what we’re having for dinner! Oh, then after that, if they could just give me the shopping list, that would really be helpful. Guess what? It’s in there!! Love it! 🙂
So if you have never purchased an issue of Molly’s Money Saving Digest, I would encourage you to check it out at least once. If you incorporate just a couple of the ideas, I’m sure you would more than recoup the purchase price. There are a few purchase options available; single issues at $4.95, Pick-A-Pack (pick 5 favorites) at $20.00, or an annual Molly Membership at $3.95 per month. As for me, I’m considering the annual membership, if for nothing less than the collection of dinner recipes/grocery lists! Molly’s website can be found at www.econobusters.com.

E-Book Review – Homeschooling/High School
Posted by jlsgrant in Book & Product Reviews on March 29, 2010
Whether you are cautiously optimistic, slightly anxious, or completely terrified, this e-book is an excellent collection of testimonials about tackling the highschool years.
Help, Lord, I’m Getting Ready to Start Homeschooling My High Schooler! is an engaging collection of very candid, personal experiences from over a dozen parent teachers, some of whom had to conquer extraordinary circumstances and challenges in homeschooling through the high school years. There are also segments written by adult homeschooled individuals, which for me, brought even more encouragement to finish the course! I enjoyed hearing their perspectives on the benefits of homeschooling during these challenging years.
The book concludes with an insightful question and answer segment by Mary Tanksley, an Epilogue which includes the graduation speech of Jonathon Wuehler entitled, “How Homeschooling Has Benefited My Life” and a wonderful collection of recommended resources for homeschooling your high schooler.
To be honest, I was a little disappointed by the request to review more of a “self-help” type book. I really enjoy looking at curriculum and was hoping my first task would be to evaluate curriculum I had not yet looked at. But after reading thru these great tesimonials, I took the last sip of my coffee, and felt refreshed and encourage to trudge ahead into the highschool years.
