Big Bug

This lovely couple has been hanging out on the pool cage for days.  I’ve seen them many times before, but had to get out Florida’s Fabulous Insects book today and give them a proper name…

  • Defends itself by squirting stinky fluid on predator
  • Stinky fluid can cause temporary blindness of birds or mammals
  • The male is MUCH small than the female
  • Male spends most of its time riding around on the female’s back

For you Biology students:

Order:  Phasmatodea, Family: Pseudophasmatidae, Genus:  Anisomorpha, Species: Buprestoides
