D is for Dragonfly…It is also for Dazzling!
Certain times of the year, our backyard plays host to a school, no a herd, no a flock, no a swarm of dragonflies. While I wasn’t sure I was fond of the idea at first, I recently read that their diet is composed of mosquitos and other small insects. So I have come to terms with the fact that they are quite beneficial! (As are spiders, but I haven’t come to terms with them yet!)
I believe this variety is a male Eastern Pondhawk. No, I am not an entomologist….just read on BugGuide.net that the females and juvenile males are green! When the male matures, it turns from green to blue! That’s kind of cool, don’t you think?
