On our recent trip to Caledesi Island, one of our favorite Florida places, I came across this Gopher Tortoise crossing a trail. This tortoise is known as a “keystone” species because of it’s role in helping other species! Their burrows are shared with over 350 other species! Now that’s hospitality!
The Gopher Tortoise is listed on the Florida Endangered Species List and is protected by state law. For more information on this incredible creature, check out Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission
“But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.” Job 12:7 – 10 NIV
