C is for Catepillar….It is also for Cute!
We were doing school one day, reading a little historical fiction and something caught our eye out the family room window. A Spicebush Swallowtail butterfly was flying around our Camphor Tree, gently laying its eggs. I couldn’t be more excited! Of all the catepillars, I think this is one of the most beautiful!
As the tiny brownish hatchling grows, it forms a web to hold the leaf around itself like a tube. This makes them very difficult to spot and protects them from would-be predators. As the days progress, they turn from brown to bright green, then to orange just before forming their crysalis. The black “eyes” are not eyes at all, just beautifully painted on eye-spots. I especially love the little white fleck in the corner that looks like a reflection.
